Faculty Development Reports and Outcomes

Welcoming New Faculty

New Faculty Orientation is a two-day onboarding process for our newest faculty. The New Faculty Teaching Group provides mentoring and development opportunities for faculty in their first and second years of teaching.

Annual Faculty Development Events

Faculty August Experience is a half day interactive workshop held annually before the fall semester offering an opportunity for colleagues to learn collaboratively about issues and resources relevant to our teaching. Below are the event reports for recent years.

Preparation for Evaluation. In January of each year, all faculty up for review by the Faculty Evaluation Committee (FEC) in the following year are invited to attend a pre-tenure review meeting to discuss the review process with members of the FEC. Is your colleague up for review? Check out Tips for Writing Colleague letters.

Faculty Pedagogy Book Discussions. Each year faculty select one or more books to discuss in small groups. To recommend a book or get a copy of a past book, contact Valerie Young. Past books and discussion groups include:

Fostering a Diverse and Equitable Learning Environment

Faculty play an important role in maintaining a learning environment that welcomes and engages all learners. Together with student researchers, Valerie Young has conducted focus groups to gather student perspectives on inclusion and belonging at Hanover College. The results of these focus groups and our recommendations for action are distributed to Administration.

Our commitment to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion includes faculty development and training workshops. Below are the event reports.

Academic Advising is an important part of a faculty member's responsibilities. Each year, faculty are encouraged to attend an advisor training workshop. In 2021, Valerie Young and Hanover student Alex Kidd conducted research on academic advising at Hanover College. Findings of their study affirmed excellent advisor qualities and best practices outlined in NACADA's guidelines. Hanover students considered their academic advisors to be available to offer help and support.

Learning through the COVID-19 Pandemic
